So apparently Friday was National Dog Day. Now, you may roll your eyes because, really, does every day need to have something to celebrate? Well, YES! I mean, why the heck not? I think having something to celebrate - be that dogs, ice cream, dessert, cake, you get the idea - makes life fun!
Okay, but to get to the point, we're talking about the inspiration behind the Lab Cuff. If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat (maryfranflowers), you are more than aware that I have a dog of my own (#porterflowers), and that he is not a lab. However, lil P has not been mine for very long, and long before P, there was another big dog in my life - my sister's dog, Annabelle (see below in her namesake jewel). Annabelle is an eight year old chocolate labrador retriever, and she is sweet as can be. The Lab Cuff's design was modeled after Annabelle's size and stature. I've always believed that labs are regal dogs. They're loyal and gentle and love you back just as much as you love them. It has been a true joy to watch my niece Thea grow up with Annabelle. Ah, puppies and babies, there's literally nothing like it.
The Lab Cuff was actually one of the first ever cuffs I designed. Some of you may know that the Bee and Elephant were of the first animal cuffs designed, the originals actually produced while I was still in school, but the Lab was conceived shortly after - in my teensy tiny Manhattan apartment, long before I made this whole jewelry thing a full time gig. Back then, I was on an animal cuff kick, and it hit me. People love their dogs. I mean L-O-V-E their dogs. (I am one of those people.) So, I figured what the heck, let's see if this works. Let's see if people actually like the idea of wearing their favorite fur children on their arm. And what'd ya know? It's been a best seller since day 1! Turns out dog jewelry is a (wo)man's best friend. So alright already, go grab yours while we still have them in stock (or commission me to do a special one of your pup - I do custom, just ask!)
On an ending note, perhaps it's time for me to make a doodle cuff - thoughts, friends?
With all the puppy love in the world,
Check out this throw back - terrible filter and all! Found this gem from back when I used to work by the candle light (literally) in my NYC apt!
